Roanoke, Virginia, often referred to as the "Capital of the Blue Ridge," has a rich history that dates back to the mid-18th century. The area's development was initially influenced by its natural resources, particularly the salt licks that attracted both wildlife and Native Americans. These sites, vital for hunting and gathering, marked the beginnings of human settlement in the region.
The early history of Roanoke is tied to settlers like Mark Evans and Tasker Tosh, who arrived from Pennsylvania in the 1740s and settled near these salt licks. The salt marshes were not just ecological treasures but also central to the community's early development. The first village in the Roanoke Valley, Gainsborough, was established in 1834 near these salt licks, which were colloquially known as 'licks.' The village was later renamed Big Lick, emphasizing its connection to these natural salt deposits.
In 1838, Roanoke County was formed from a portion of Botetourt County. At that time, the population was modest, including a small number of slaves whose exact number remains unclear. Salem, with a population of around 200, became the county seat, overshadowing Big Lick, which had about 50 residents. Nearby, the smaller community of Vinton was linked to Big Lick by a narrow brick road.
The mid-19th century brought significant changes with the arrival of the railroad. Although the railroad initially bypassed Big Lick in 1852, the town adapted by relocating closer to the tracks, a move that led to the establishment of Old Lick. The town of Big Lick was officially chartered in 1874 but underwent another name change in 1881 to Roanoke, derived from the Indian word "Rawrenock," referring to the shell beads used as trading goods.
Roanoke's transformation into a prominent urban center began in earnest with the establishment of the Norfolk and Western Railway in 1882. The city's strategic location as a railroad crossroads spurred rapid growth, leading to its charter as the City of Roanoke in 1884. The city's historic market, dating back to these early years, continues to be a bustling hub of commerce.
Today, Roanoke is a vibrant city known for its transportation, distribution, trade, manufacturing, healthcare, entertainment, and recreational facilities. It has earned the nickname "Festival City" due to its numerous cultural events, including the Festival In the Park, Roanoke GO Outside Festival, and the Strawberry Festival, among others.
The Roanoke Star, a 100-foot-high illuminated landmark on Mill Mountain, symbolizes the city's friendliness and progress. Known as the "Star City of the South," the star's glow is visible for miles, serving as a beacon for aviators. The city's location also offers easy access to numerous attractions, including Dixie Caverns, Salem Museum, The Natural Bridge, and historic towns like Fincastle and Lexington, all within an hour's drive.
Roanoke's evolution from a small settlement near salt licks to a bustling, modern city is a testament to its adaptability and the rich tapestry of its historical roots.
