Need a trusted builder or designer in Fincastle, VA? TAS Design is proud to bring high-quality architecture and Class A contracting services to this historic small town. Based in nearby Roanoke, we’re experts in custom home design, renovation, and new builds that match Fincastle’s charm and character.
Fincastle may be small, but it plays a major role in the area as the county seat of Botetourt County. Tucked into the Roanoke metro area, it’s close to the amenities of city life, yet it remains quiet, scenic, and full of historic character. The town is known for its preserved downtown and historic architecture, drawing in those who want a slower pace of life in a community with heart and heritage.
Fincastle’s roots stretch back to the mid-1700s, when Scotch-Irish and German immigrants came down from Pennsylvania to settle in the region. John Miller’s sawmill became the center of the early community, and in 1770, his home served as the first courthouse when Botetourt County separated from Augusta County. Two years later, Israel Christian donated 45 acres of land to lay out the streets and lots that would become the town. Fincastle was named in honor of George, Lord Fincastle—the son of Virginia’s then-lieutenant governor, Lord Dunmore.
Important buildings began to rise early in the town's history. The first log courthouse was built in 1773 in the center of town, followed shortly by a brick Anglican church on land also donated by Israel Christian. Although the church was later closed following the Revolutionary War and the disestablishment of the Anglican Church, it was eventually taken over by a Presbyterian congregation and redesigned in the Greek Revival style that still stands today. This blending of old and new is at the heart of what makes Fincastle so special.
Throughout the 1800s, Fincastle grew into a regional center for trade and commerce—especially in the wool industry. With that growth came more development, including taverns, hotels, and storefronts. A second courthouse was built in 1818, followed by a larger, Greek Revival-style courthouse in 1850. That same building still serves Botetourt County today, having been carefully rebuilt after a damaging fire in 1970.
The town is home to several notable properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the
Bowyer-Holladay House, Breckinridge Mill, Greenfield, Hawthorne Hall, Prospect Hill, Santillane, Wheatland Manor, Wiloma, and the Fincastle Historic District itself. Together, they showcase the town’s rich history, from early colonial times through the 19th century. Local pride in maintaining these landmarks is strong, and any new construction or renovation must respect that legacy.
Building in Fincastle isn’t like building anywhere else. This is a town where history is woven into everyday life, and where homes and buildings must reflect both the past and the present. TAS Design understands this balance. Our team knows how to design homes that blend seamlessly with historic surroundings, whether it’s a new house on a historic street or a renovation of a property like those near the Bowyer-Holladay House or within the Fincastle Historic District. We take extra care with design details—such as materials, rooflines, and window styles—so that every project fits naturally within the town’s historic look and feel.
TAS Design brings together architectural vision and hands-on building expertise to serve clients throughout Fincastle and Botetourt County. As both licensed architects and Class A contractors, we guide your project from the first sketch to the final coat of paint.
